Knit City 2016 Recap

14 October, 2016

It’s been nearly 2 weeks since Knit City and I’ve been wanting to share this recap for days now, but… you know, I was a bit tied up with spinning for Spinzilla. As one of my “Taking Back Friday” afternoons, I made this little recap video about what happened this year for SweetGeorgia Yarns at Knit City, Oct 1 and 2, 2016.

Big huge thanks to our team at SweetGeorgia (Hubert, Teresa, David, Charlotte, Misty, and Heather) for helping make this weekend come together in terms of setting up and helping at Ysolda’s lecture and at the booth all weekend. Also, thank you to the rest of our team of dyers and packagers (Mariana, Christian, Ben, Yammie, Rebecca, Joy, and Eugene) for doing a TON of dyeing before the show and also for re-labeling much of our yarn with the new labels just ONE day before the show. These guys are simply the best. We couldn’t have brought as much yarn as we did without everyone’s hand in it.

Since we were the title sponsor for Knit City this year, we also had the great privilege of sponsoring the Friday evening lecture with Ysolda Teague. She gave an interesting talk about the curious history of garment sizing in both fashion and knitwear design. Before the talk, Teresa, Misty, and I were on hand to help hand out new yarn samples to the guests. As well, we brought a mini ice-cream bar from Rain or Shine Ice Cream — and omg, I’ve gone back to the ice cream store twice already since Knit City to get more ice cream. It’s so so good.

Saturday and Sunday were fantastic market days and this year, the show has grown significantly. There are more vendors, more vendors from out of town, and more customers who stayed until the last dying minutes of Sunday afternoon. We brought about 40 colourways (of the 120+ that we make) of each of our main yarns and were really thrilled to be able to provide sweater quantities and also more selection than we’ve ever been able to.

Also big thanks to Rachel Smith, our spinning instructor at the studio and the spinner behind the Welfordpurls blog. She came and did spinning demonstrations and chatted with future spinners all weekend long. I think she managed to also spin nearly all of the October Club fibre in one weekend.

The organizers, Fiona and Amanda did such an amazing job of providing a weekend-long experience for the knitting community of the Vancouver area. We are so thankful that Knit Social continues to grow and organize such wonderful events. And we have been so happy to sponsor these event every year since they began. Happy 5th Anniversary, Knit City! See you again next year!
