July 2015 Club // "Modern Mandarin" on BFL+Silk

Each month, we dye a brand new, unique colourway for our Spinning Fibre and Sock Yarn Clubs. We’d like to share what we sent out to our members in July:

Colourway // Modern Mandarin

After over 70 years of living just outside of Tokyo, Japan, my grandmother recently moved to Taipei, Taiwan, to be closer to family… Unfortunately, crossing the Pacific Ocean is far too difficult now for my 90-year old grandmother. Instead, we have been deep into planning for my whole family in Vancouver (that’s ten bodies, altogether) to travel to Taipei in September to see my grandmother.

It’s been about 25 years since I’ve been to Taiwan. While I’m (naturally) nervous about things like how two babies under two will acclimate themselves to the super humid weather in Taipei, I’m also anxious about how much has changed since I last visited. Perhaps I fear not being able to keep up? But travel is always an excellent remedy for fear of the unknown. I look forward to breathing in the energy of this thoroughly modern Asia.
Modern Mandarin is a mix of my favourite colours (we used pink and mandarin orange for our wedding!) with a punch of jewel purple and a bent towards fiery orange-red.

BFL Sock is a blend of 80% superwash Bluefaced Leicester and 20% nylon. BFL is one of the softest, glossiest medium-long wools (longer fibre “staple” length), making it a great choice for handknit socks. The fibre is naturally stronger and more durable than softer wools like Merino. With the addition of nylon, your handknit projects will last for a long time.

Fibre // BFL+Silk

BFL+Silk is one of my absolute favourite fibre blends! It is a beautifully lustrous and luxurious blend of 75% Bluefaced Leicester wool and glittery 25% Tussah Silk. While BFL is soft and glossy on its own, it’s generally considered a longer-stapled wool which can lend to feeling coarser (than fibres like Merino or Polwarth). The raw silk in this blend adds to the softness and shine making this an indulgence to spin.

I even managed to spin my braid into a 318-yard skein of sportweight, Navajo-plied yarn. I haven’t had a chance to wash it yet, but looking forward to soaking this skein and knitting it up. I have grand plans for it already!
