Spinzilla: Just shy of 1000

960 yards of BFL+Silk two-ply worsted weight handspun

320 yards of BFL+Silk two-ply worsted weight handspun (180 g skein)

This is my lonely skein and my contribution for this year’s Spinzilla. It’s an embarrassingly short 320-yard skein of worsted weight handspun which counts for 960 yards of spinning (two plies and then plying). I had totally meant to spin more this year, but it’s really hard to afford the time to sit and spin. Ah well, I did my best for the time and circumstances!

As you can see, I spun absolutely nothing on the first night of Spinzilla. I fell asleep while putting the baby down for the night and lost three hours of potential spinning time! It’s ok, better luck next year.

BFL+Silk, randomly dyed

I have been experimenting with dyeing multicoloured fibres in a few different ways and this was one of my trials. I love it in the braid and how the colours are all random and jumbled up. But I’m a little less taken with it once it’s been spun up. Perhaps it was how I stripped and spun it… perhaps it would have looked better as a Navajo-ply… perhaps I’m just not used to seeing the more muted, heathered result. But I’m feeling good about the process of experimenting and trying different methods, and perhaps that’s the point of Spinzilla… spin as much as you can, as best as you can, and challenge yourself.

How did you guys do with your Spinzilla goals? Did you make or break new records for yourself? Let’s see your handspun!

Meanwhile I was surprised how much I liked the finished skein considering how much fuschia is in there (hot pink isn’t usually my jam)! I didn’t take part in Spinzilla this year as I’m just learning, but I have found your Craftsy class to be really helpful! Learning about all the different options and techniques for managing colour really sucked me in to spinning, so much that I took the plunge yesterday and bought my first wheel! So, thank you!
