Felicia's Notebook, Spinning, SweetGeorgia

Join us at SweetGeorgia for Spinzilla 2017

Each year, Spinzilla is a week of intense spinning, but it’s also a week to prioritize time for yourself and your wheel, and to really indulge in transforming fibre into yarn. Sure, it’s a competition, but we don’t aim to be intensely competitive. We aim to enjoy ourselves and share in the experience of spinning together.

This year, we welcome past team member, Katrina Stewart, as our new team captain! For the past three years, she has been our team photographer as well, sending our team photos into the Spinzilla competition and getting us some press. She’s also been our resident spinner and blogger for the Club for the past year, and finally, this October, she will be teaching our Beginning Spinning class at the studio.

Every Spinzilla, we host a couple spin-ins for our team, but even if you are on a different team, you can join us for the evening. We will host our official Spinzilla Spin-Ins at the SweetGeorgia Studio on Tuesday, October 3 at 7 pm. New this year, we’re really opening up the studio during the weekday daytime to anyone who would like to come hang out at the studio and spin. You are all welcome to come from Tuesday, October 3 to Friday, October 6 from 10 am to 5 pm while the studio is openMonday, Oct 2 is a teaching day as SweetGeorgia will be hosting workshops by Lucy Poskitt and Felicia Lo that day, and Monday, Oct 9 is Thanksgiving, so we’ll be closed.

In the meantime, I hope you’re prepping your fibres for Spinzilla. You might have noticed the exclusive Spinzilla 2017 colourway we released earlier this week, called Firestarter. I’ve already spun up a braid of that Silk Puff and it’s on my wheel now. It’s all spun up and I need to decide how to ply it. Perhaps chain ply? Possibly two-ply from a centre-pull ball.

It’s not an easy feat to get on our SweetGeorgia team, it seems, and each year the window to sign up gets shorter and shorter. In fact, this year, our team filled up within the first 40 minutes of registration opening. You might have heard that I missed the window myself. Partly, it was me getting kiddos dressed in the morning at 7 am… partly, it’s because I’ve been sort of crushed with things on my plate… and partly, it’s because I felt that I wanted to open up as many spaces as possible to our spinning friends to join us. I was planning to spin alongside everyone anyways, and so I was encouraged to sign up for Rogue, just so my yardage wouldn’t go uncounted. Let’s be honest, I’ve had very little yardage to contribute for the past couple years! There was the one year when I spun just one skein in total.

I’m excited to see everyone so enthusiastically preparing their fibre stash and tuning up their wheels for the week of spinning ahead. It’s time to take time for your craft and I hope you enjoy every minute!!!
