At our Taking Back Friday vlog, I’m excited to talk about hand-dyed sock blanks and what to make with them! Sharing some ideas for working with colourful sock blank gradients to hopefully help inspire your next project, we’ve also listed out helpful steps for creating your own special sock yarn blank Lighthouse Hat!

Earlier this week, we revealed our Secret Stash No. 1 hand-dyed adventure — our new, limited edition splash-dyed and ombre sock blanks. In the video, I show all three of the colourways and the different projects we have worked up in each. Here’s a taster:

Our first Secret Stash sock blank colourways include Lychee Gummy, Purple Mangosteen, and Dragonfruit Limeade. Note that these colourways are now discontinued, however we have a range of gradient hand-dyed sock blanks that would work beautifully in their place.

We’ve also created a monthly yarn and quarterly fibre Secret Stash Club if you’re looking to explore and enjoy further colour play!

Instructions

  • To knit the Lighthouse Hat, download a copy of the pattern which is available from Alexis Adrienne / Cold Comfort Knits on Ravelry (link to pattern below).
  • Prepare your sock blank by either working directly from the blank (unraveling as you go) or by winding the sock blank into a cake/ball.
  • Using your crochet hook, create a long length of chain stitches from the entire sock blank. Wind this into a ball as you work the chain stitches.
  • Using your chained length of yarn and your US 8 / 5mm needles, CO 72 sts and follow the Lighthouse Hat pattern until the last round of ribbing.
  • Change to US 10 / 6mm needles, and follow knitting based on the pattern instructions until 7 inches from the cast on edge.

  • Work the decreases and then finish off the top of the hat.
  • Make a pompom (optional) using the leftover yarn and attach to the hat.
  • Weave in all ends and block the finished hat.

Notes

The SweetGeorgia hand-dyed sock blank colourway used in this project, Dragonfruit Limeade, has since been discontinued. However, any sock blank or fingering-weight yarn would work well in its place. Find inspiration in our current sock blank colourways at your local yarn shop or at the SweetGeorgia online shop.
This is a fabulous project idea when you’re looking to maintain the gradient of a sock blank. You can see an example of this at Charlotte’s Glas Hat project on Ravelry. Creating a chained length of yarn from a sock blank or skein is also fabulous practice for new crocheters, practicing to create evenly sized chain stitches. If you’re new to crochet, you can learn more at Charlotte’s Crochet Basics course at the School of SweetGeorgia.
