Exploring Handpainted Warps with the Sunset Scarves Pattern

4 January, 2025

Designed as part of Felicia Lo’s Handpainted Warps course at the School of SweetGeorgia, explore colour in weaving with the Sunset Scarves pattern. Weaving with handpainted warps offers and vibrant and creative way to elevate your textile projects. Find inspiration to create your own striking colour effect, expanding on the threading pattern to make these scarves your own!

SUNSET SCARVES PATTERN

Felicia’s Sunset Scarves pattern is woven in one of her favourite twill threadings: Dornick Twill. A broken pointed twill threading, it produces an elegant fabric with long diagonal lines. This pattern was created specifically to not interfere with the nuances of the handpainted warp threads.

Most of the sample scarves were woven with SweetGeorgia 20/2 Mulberry Silk yarn for weft. However, for one of the samples, Felicia chose to use a very fine cashmere silk yarn from stash. We encourage you to experiment with different colours and yarns to see what you can create. Modify, expand, or swap out this threading pattern to create your own unique handwoven scarf.

If you’re trying to decide what sett and reed to use in a new project, ask yourself what kind of fabric do you want. What yarn do you want to use for your warp, or for your weft? All of these questions can be answered if you do a little bit of sampling! Weave a few good inches, cut it off the loom, wash it and see how it behaves.

At Felicia’s Choosing the Right Reed & Finding the Perfect Sett vlog episode, she talks about considerations to make when choosing which reed to use for your weaving project. How changing the sett can affect the feeling of your finished piece.
