Inspired by our April Secret Stash Yarn Club, Sakura Season, SweetGeorgia team member Anita paired this variegated colourway with Corrina Ferguson’s knit design, Wylene. Chic and charming, this cute pullover tee was the perfect spring companion with these limited-release club hand-dyed hues. With simple stripes and subtle lace, the knit design enhances the playful effects of the speckled yarn.

ABOUT SAKURA SEASON

Every spring in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland, we celebrate sakura, cherry blossom, season. It’s a wonderful time of year where, on every cherry blossom lined street you turn, cameras are capturing these new blooms.

We’ve already designed multiple colourways inspired by these delicate pink flowers — colourways that celebrate the delicate and fragile nature of cherry blossoms, and the transition of deep pink buds to pale pink petals. However, for our April Secret Stash colourway, we were captivated by the theme of sakura along with the challenge of looking at one idea from different perspectives.

As Felicia shares in the Sakura Season colourway reveal post, I wanted the colours to emphasize the celebration. Flower viewing parties might be meditative, tranquil, and quiet for some… but it also might be raucous, unbridled, and social for others.

KNITTING THE WYLENE TOP

SweetGeorgia Team member, Anita, paired Sakura Season along with one skein of Tough Love Sock in Lavender. Knitting Corrina Ferguson’s Wylene top design, the result is a colourful and fun top to wear through spring and summer.

Anita first unravelled the sock blank and wound the two strands by hand along with Rachael’s help at the studio. If you’re new to working with sock blanks, view Felicia’s tutorial for how to work with yarn in this format.

For this project, an extra lace repeat was worked before separating for the sleeves and body. This was done to adjust for the lost depth from gauge change. Also, waist shaping was omitted, resulting in a gentle a-line shape. Anita knit size 44, working from one sock blank ball and then with the next. At the end of the project, there was still a considerable amount of leftover yarn.

Instructions

  • Download a copy of the Wylene knitting pattern which is available at our online shop (link below) and on Ravelry.
  • Note that for this project, you can work directly from the sock blank, or first wind the double sock blank into separate balls and work from there. The yarn will be crinkly, but will smooth out in the blocking process. We also have a helpful video and instructions on winding a double sock blank (link below)

  • Using MC (Lavender) and smaller circular needles, work the picot cast-on as listed in the pattern. Switch to CC (Sakura Season) and using the larger needles, follow the set-up, increase, and lace mesh pattern instructions.

  • Slip stitches to waste yarn and rejoin MC, working two rounds of the body section in MC, continuing on with the pattern. Continue to work in stripe pattern as established, until the body measures your desired length.
Note: an extra lace repeat was worked before separating sleeves & body to adjust for the lost depth from gauge change. As well, waist shaping was omitted in this knit sample, resulting in more of an a-line shape.
