As autumn settles in and Halloween approaches, we’re reminded of cherished family traditions of hand-sewn costumes, visits to the local pumpkin patch, and the vibrant colours that define the season. This October, we captured that festive spirit with our Secret Stash Club colourway: Pumpkin Patch! Inspired by memories of giant felt pumpkins and fields aglow with rich oranges, earthy browns, golds, and greens, this month’s yarn is all about celebrating the warmth and playfulness of fall. Whether you’re knitting, crocheting, or weaving, our Pumpkin Patch sock blank offers a fun, colour-changing experience that brings the magic of autumn right to your needles and loom.
THE OCTOBER COLOUR STORY
Oh how I love the weeks leading up to Halloween! As kids, my mom sewed costumes each year for me and my two brothers. One year, my brother dressed up as a giant felt pumpkin. So memorable. So orange. And so, it was simply the norm to make costumes each year for my own kids. I’ve made Minecraft Steve and ninja costumes, and this year, one of my kids has requested to dress up as a Starbucks barista.

Visiting the local pumpkin patch (funny, it’s the same farm as the apple picking) has been an annual tradition and I just love how it anchors the season. Rich and warm autumn oranges, golds, and rust browns tipped with green!
SOCK BLANK PROJECT IDEAS
Sock blanks are yarns dyed in a machine-knit tube that you can knit or crochet from directly, unraveling as you go. Alternatively, you can wind the blank into a ball or cake before using it. Sock blanks offer a unique way to dye colour gradients, as we dye directly on the knitted fabric. It creates a fun colour-changing experience while you work with the yarn.

We suggest using the Pumpkin Patch sock blank on its own, or combine it with a second skein to create stripes or interesting blocks of colour. One sock blank is also enough to knit or machine-knit a simple lace scarf. For this month’s Club sample, we chose the Heathered Sunset pattern by Tabetha Hedrick to highlight the full gradient in a triangular-shaped shawl. Read more about the knit sample at the project page.

If you weave, you might use the gradient sock blank as warp or weft in a project. Sock Blank scarves are a simple but incredibly satisfying project that lets you experience the magic of slow cloth. At the Weaving Sock Blank Scarves post, explore different ways to approach this idea and see what beautiful creations can be made along the way.
