Each month, our Secret Stash Club monthly yarn shipments include inspiring project ideas to help you make the most of your new hand-dyed yarn. For the July 2025 colourway, “One Day at Venice,” Anita chose to knit the beautiful Afetos Shawl pattern by Cartucha Knits. This asymmetric shawl features garter stitch and lace, knit with alternating variegated and solid yarns, creating a stunning piece that truly highlights the hand-dyed hues.

ABOUT THE YARN

The original inspiration for this month’s colourway was “old school, vintage, and retro beach vibes” with the golden, apricot-coloured sunset and the turquoisey-teal water. It’s meant to be lighthearted, relaxed, and filled with summer fun.

One Day at Venice captures this breezy spirit of a vintage California summer, evoking carefree days spent by the shore. The heart of this colour is a cherished memory: a joyful California adventure, celebrating over a decade of friendship. Read more about the story behind this colourway at the colour reveal blog post.

KNITTING THE AFETOS SHAWL

Using long, asymmetric rows of garter stitch is an excellent way to prevent colour pooling. With this in mind, SweetGeorgia Team member Anita chose the Cartucha Knits pattern “Afetos”.

Vera of Cartucha Knits describes herself as a “Portuguese woman addicted to knitting and cooking, living near Lisboa and the sea.” Her Afetos design perfectly complements the mood of this colourway. “Afeto,” translated from Portugese, means affection or fondness—a warm and tender feeling.

To let the hand-dyed variegated colourway shine, Anita paired a skein of SweetGeorgia Tough Love Sock in Natural together with the One Day at Venice skein. Afetos is available as a free download on Ravelry and includes separate instructions for knitting the garter stitch section using the Portugese knitting method. Felicia demonstrates how to create purl stitches with this technique in her Purl Stitch, Five Different Ways blog and video post.

Instructions

  • To knit the Afetos shawl design, download a copy of the pattern from Cartucha Knits, available at Ravelry.
  • Follow directions for casting on and working through the stripe and lace sections of the pattern, alternating with the One Day at Venice colourway and the Natural colourway.
