When getting ready to travel to h+h Americas in Chicago for the first time, SweetGeorgia team members got to work assigning the task of knitting a variety of samples we could bring along to showcase our hand-dyed yarns in action. Enter in Andrea Mowry’s The Throwover pullover, chosen to beautifully highlight the ease and versatility of combining colourways across our Enigma, Elixir and Ethereal colourway collections.
THE THROWOVER + THE THROWBACK
As Andrea Mowry shares at The Throwback pattern page, her earlier cardigan version using the same colourwork knit design: “I knew after I finished The Throwback that I needed a pullover version as well. A classic sweater, perfect over t-shirts and sandy jeans on cool summer evenings, or pulled over woolen undershirts for a winter hike.”
The Throwover pattern is exactly that… a classic, everyday sweater that can easily be thrown on and paired with a number of outfit styles. With a stranded colourwork yoke section, it then moves into relaxing, single-colour knitting for the remainder of the sweater and sleeves. This pullover pattern was also an easy choice as it was already in Felicia’s queue, after having earlier enjoyed knitting Andrea’s cardigan version of the design (see Felicia’s The Throwback cardigan here, shared on the Taking Back Friday vlog).
COLOUR COMBINATIONS FOR COLOURWORK
Figuring out colour combinations for a new project can be a daunting task. Maybe we fall in love with a specific colour for the main body of a knit, but selecting the hues to compliment that colourway is where we can easily get stuck.
To help with making this next step easier, we encourage you to read through Felicia’s Colours for Colourwork downloadable guide. In this blog and vlog post, Felicia talks about high and low contrast combinations, and how this can affect the overall feeling of your finished project. She also shows how our SweetGeorgia Colour System Collections were created with this process in mind, to help make this step easier.
The Nightcall colourway used as the main colour in this knit project is from our Enigma Collection. Representing the deeper, darker versions of our Elixir colourways, Enigma carries a strong presence and gives colour combinations an effective contrast. They work beautifully when combined with their mid-tone (Elixir) and lighter hues (Ethereal) to create an effective contrast in your project.

If you’re interested in learning more about combining colours, we also suggest Felicia’s Colour Play course at the School of SweetGeorgia. In this free online course, you can learn all about colour theory and putting together your own unique colour palettes.

- 1 skein SweetGeorgia Yarns Superwash Worsted Moonlight
Instructions
- To knit The Throwover sweater, download a copy of the pattern which is available from Andrea Mowry on Ravelry.
