In this video tutorial, Charlotte Lee demonstrates winding a centre-pull ball with SweetGeorgia BFL+Silk DK yarn using only her hands and an umbrella yarn swift. Throughout the demonstration, she explains the importance of maintaining consistent tension to preserve the yarn’s elasticity and offers tips on handling the ball to prevent hand discomfort or strain. Once the ball is fully wound, it is ready to use in various projects such as knitting, crocheting, or weaving.

Winding a Centre-Pull Ball by Hand
Equipment
Materials
- 1 skein SweetGeorgia Yarns BFL+Silk Fine
Instructions
- Place yarn on the swift and cut any ties. Ensure there are no tangles in the yarn. Find the end of the yarn found on the outside of the skein.

- Hold the yarn's end tip with your thumb.

- Begin winding it loosely around your three fingers.

- As the ball forms, it may become harder to hold with your fingers. Adjust your fingers accordingly, keeping your thumb in place.

- Continue winding while rotating the ball as it forms.

- Avoid winding too tightly to prevent strain on your fingers and to not create tension spots on the yarn.

- Once the entire skein is wound into a ball form, tuck the yarn end securely on the outside of the ball.

- To find the center pull, insert your finger where the thumb was and pull gently until the center is reached.

- Now you are ready to use the yarn in any project you would like!
